Suitable for beginners or slightly experienced students
Have you ever wanted to paint a portrait but have never had the courage? Believe it or not, oil painting is not as difficult as people think. Even if you are a complete beginner or have tried painting portraits in alternative paint media before, this is the class for you.
Part 1
When you arrive at my studio, we will do a few drawing exercises to help you to understand facial proportions and the anatomy of the skull. We will then take a look at a range of portrait artist’s techniques and develop our skills further through drawing and painting exercises designed to help you think about technical and contextual elements of a portrait painting.
Part 2
In the studio you will learn some key techniques to help you build up a wash for your painting, focussing on tone and contour. You will aim to complete the wash.
part 3
In the studio you will be taught how to mix skin tones with acrylic and how to organise your palette. You will then experiment with technique and start to apply paint to your wash, building up tonal detail in the face. You can then take your painting home and complete it independently with your new found skills.
What Will I need?
Some people prefer to bring their own sketchbook. No need to bring anything else as all materials are provided.
